Booking Through Thursday: Winter Reading

Booking Through Thursday hosts a weekly bookish question here.

The northern hemisphere, at least, is socked in by winter right now… So, on a cold, wintry day, when you want nothing more than to curl up with a good book on the couch … what kind of reading do you want to do?

When I looked in my Goodreads Read list, it was pretty obvious there were trends. In 2009 I read 4 books of well over 500 pages in the winter. Also some more lightweight or melodramatic(guilty pleasures) kinds of books. I also alternated in some humor books. I guess I read the opposite of everyone else! In the summer I tend to go for darker, more serious fare. I can handle those better in the summer when the sun is shining and it's beautiful out. They don't suck me down into the doldrums. Whereas in the winter, while fighting off SAD (and even though I'm in the South, we're on track for this year to be a record cold average. Plus I'm partly in the South by choice because I know how much I hated the winter in the North.) My 2008 list looks pretty similar, so I think this is my usual mood. Sure, I sometimes get teased for my serious nonfiction choices by the pool or at the beach, but I don't take offense. I know others' brains get scrambled by the heat, but I love heat and sunshine. There are of course exceptions to this trend, but in the winter I read my beach reads!
