Book Beginnings on Friday

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading.
What We Have: One Family's Inspiring Story About Love, Loss, and Survival by Amy Boesky

"On March 25, 1993, at the end of a long, unusually snowy winter, I got a letter from the chair of the Department of Preventative Medicine and Public Health at Creighton University."

Creighton studies cancer clusters and has been studying Ms. Boesky's family for years. I expect this isn't going to be good news since every woman in her family, bar one, has died of ovarian cancer, for the last 3 generations (her mother had a preventative hysterectomy but shortly after developed breast cancer.) Thank God nothing like this runs in my family - in fact at the age of 34 I still had 3 living grandparents - but it does for a few of my friends.

That is a scary kind of letter for someone with that type of family history to get.

But...since the title says that it's an "inspiring" story, I hope that means there's some hope for the narrator.
