Teaser Tuesdays: True Grit

Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Should Be Reading

Grab your current read. Open to a random page. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!) Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

True Grit by Charles Portis

"I don't like the way you look and I don't like the way you are cutting up that turkey. I hope you go to jail."

Mattie says this to a thief. The turkey has nothing to do with his reasons for maybe going to jail.

This is one of only two places in the book I found with contractions. A lot of people have criticized the Coen brothers for not using contractions in the movie adaptation, but that's from the book (the adaptation is very faithful to the source material.) There was a very interesting discussion of this on the podcast A Way With Words recently. Apparently at that time, using contractions, while correct, was still considered rather low class and uneducated. Since Mattie is telling the story from much later (probably in her 50s) when she's very proper and well-educated, it would be appropriate for Mattie to use that language, and in her telling, her language bleeds into the language related by her of all the other people in her story, which is very true to how people tell stories in real life. Interesting and thoughtful choice that Mr. Portis made in this book.

Very nice teaser -- wanting to read this and waiting to see the movie until I do so!
