Book Beginnings: My Own Country

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading.

My Own Country: A Doctor's Story by Abraham Verghese

"Summer, 1985. A young man is driving down from New York to visit his parents in Johnson City, Tennessee."

Being from Middle Tennessee (Johnson City is in Eastern), and formerly living in New York, I am already intrigued. I have driven past Johnson City many dozen times, but never stopped (except maybe to get gas.)

This books is AMAZING!! I actually lived in Johnson City during the time about which Verghese writes, but I didn't discover his book until I was living in Iowa in the 90s. Loved all his books!

I look forward to getting it. He is such a great writer. Plus, the area there around Johnson City is gorgeous.

Can't wait to see what you think of this one once you're finished.
