Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell p. 19
"I was circumambulating the crater's lip, seeking a clearer trail back to Ocean Bay, when a startling hoo-roosh! sent me diving to the ground--the mind abhors a vacancy & is wont to people it with phantoms, thus I glimpsed first a tusked hog charging, then a Maori warrior, spear held aloft, his face inscribed with the ancestral hatred of his race. 'Twas but a mollyhawk, wings "flupping" the air like a windjammer."
I'm sure we'e all experienced this - being startled by something like a bird and first thinking it is something much scarier (but hopefully without the racism.)

My son loved this book and so your teaser makes me curious. Nice one.
Here's mine: Dearest Rose
To me it looks like a hard read. Always wondered about this one.
I'm curious about the setting of this book, and I'd like to know more. Good teaser.
My Teaser is from CONFESSIONS OF A PREDATORY LENDER.
