'Since you have betrayed my hospitality and flagrantly disregarded my express wishes, perhaps you will not think it unreasonable if I inquire which of my property you have contaminated with your instruction.'"
The "contamination" here is teaching reading. The "property" is a slave. March was in Virginia as a peddler twenty years before the civil war when this incident happened.
